It's a big week for high-profile films to make their mark on the video market, as recent Academy Award winners and nominated films arrive in pristine Blu-ray disc editions, while another foreign film tries to capitalize on the phenomenon wave that's entering theaters this week - The Hunger Games. While edgy might be the best word to describe most of the new releases, younger viewers have something to look forward to as well.
Battle Royale
One of the most controversial films to ever come out of Japan makes its North American debut this week and the timing couldn't have been more suspicious. Mirroring the plot from the highly-anticipated feature film release of The Hunger Games on March 23rd, 2012, Battle Royale showcases a bleak future in which 42 exploding collar-strapped students are sent to a remote island with weapons and tasked with killing one another.
Made over a decade ago, the horror film made by Kinji Fukasaku has a reputation for its extreme shocking value that's found itself banned in other countries. Definitely not for the faint of heart. The movie is released as a single-disc Blu-ray or DVD Director's Cut edition, but collectors can also buy the four-disc Battle Royale: The Complete Collection Blu-ray and DVD set which contains both the Theatical and Director's Cut of the first film, bonus content and the sequel Battle Royale II.
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
Director David Fincher's unflinching North American adaptation of the best-selling novel by Swedish author Steig Larsson hits shelves this week. It stars Academy Award-nominated actress Rooney Mara as dark heroine Lisbeth Salander and Daniel Craig as Mikael Blomvkvist, two unconventional researchers trying to uncover the truth to a thirty-year old mystery that has plaqued a high-society family.
Gripping and suspenseful, Fincher brings his Se7en and Zodiac experience to a film that just recently picked up the Oscar for Best Film Editing, so expect a wild ride. Although a capable Swedish film version of the story already exists, fans have given this interpretation a thumbs up as well. It co-stars Academy Award-winner Christopher Plummer, Stellan Skarsgaard and Robin Wright.
The film is released as a 3-disc Blu-ray/DVD combo and a single-disc DVD copy. The Blu-ray comes with pristine 1080p high-definition, a dynamite DTS-HD Audio soundtrack, over four hours of bonus behind-the-scenes footage surrounding the film and an audio commentary by David Fincher himself.
The Muppets
We should all take a moment and quietly thank star Jason Segel (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, How I Met Your Mother) for finding the determination to convince Walt Disney to dust-off the beloved Jim Henson-created characters and deliver a new film that enlightens a modern generation to how appealing these puppets can be.
Segel co-writes and stars as Gary, who with younger Muppet-brother Walter must reunite the classic Muppet characters to save their theater being torn down from a greedy oil tycoon (Chris Cooper). Amy Adams (Enchanted) also co-stars with a multitude of celebrity cameos to boot.
Parents who grew up with the property now have the chance to share them with their kids on either a single-disc DVD, Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, or a 'Wocka Wocka' 3-disc value edition that also comes with the film's soundtrack (the movie recently won the Oscar for Best Original Song).
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
Based on a best-selling book, Gary Oldman turns in yet another masterful acting performance (that was nominated for Best Actor at the 2012 Oscars) as George Smiley - a semi-retired former espionage agent of MI6 who is forced to uncover a possible mole within the secret intelligence organization.
Directed by Swedish filmmaker Tomas Alfredson (Let The Right One In), the methodical mystery/thriller, updated from the 1979 film verision, also features an impeccable supporting cast with Colin Firth (The King's Speech), Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes), Tom Hardy (Inception), John Hurt (Alien) and Ciaran Hinds (The Debt).
Consumers can find this release as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack and single-disc DVD. Those looking for a small 'diamond-in-the-rough' film experience would be wise to consider this release, as Oldman always brings his best to whatever role he embodies.
Also Set For Release...
Blu-ray and DVD buyers or renters will also notice the comedies' The Sitter (starring Jonah Hill) available as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack and Roman Polanski's Carnage - starring Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly - that's based on a play of the same name.
